Dance Stars! is a new project we're launching this summer, which aims to help children with neurological conditions to stay active with neurophysiotherapy in the form of dance.
Studies have shown that physical activity is not only massively beneficial to physical health but also to psychological wellbeing. Access to specialist neuro-physiotherapy for children is currently very limited, which means they do not get the treatment that they really need.
This project will function as a social activity and respite service for parents/caregivers and as an exciting dance class for children (aged 5-11).
The free classes will run for 12 weeks with a professional dance instructor from Merseyside Dance Institute and expert neuropediatric physiotherapist who will integrate a variety of neuro-physio exercises into the dance routines, providing valuable physical intervention to both child and parent/caregiver.
Every child and caregiver will have a neuropediatric evaluation when they sign up to the class and the details from these will underpin the session plans. Parents/caregivers can attend alongside their child in a safe, accommodating environment. It will offer a chance for them to make friends, have a break and meet others facing similar challenges.
The dance routines will have a major effect on children’s mobility, co-ordination and improve their muscle tone and strength. It will also reduce the risk of social isolation and allow the children to acquire a wider breadth of movement, decreasing the danger of poor psychological and physical wellbeing as a result. Sessions will run on Fridays throughout the summer break.
