What is corporate volunteering?

Corporate volunteering is when businesses offer their employees’ time and experience to benefit charities.

This can include helping with maintenance of physical spaces like gardens and community centres, providing business expertise, or supporting events.

Volunteering as a group can be a great opportunity for team building, boosting staff morale, and fostering strong bonds.

Many companies offer their employees paid volunteering days, where they can spend their workday volunteering for causes they care about without using their holiday allowance. Offering paid volunteering days can illustrate your company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR).

What corporate volunteering opportunities are available at The Brain Charity?

We offer corporate volunteering days in our community garden. Our garden is the first thing visitors to our centre see and in summer is a popular spot for sitting out in, so we want to keep it warm, welcoming and tidy for everyone to enjoy.

Tasks can include weeding, planting and litter picking. Volunteering days can accommodate up to 12 team members, or we can arrange multiple days for smaller groups. Volunteering days usually run 10am-4pm, and include a tour of the charity plus breaks for refreshments provided onsite. A donation per head is greatly appreciated to help cover costs and staff time.

We want to make sure that your employees’ time and expertise are used in the best possible way, so we also have several remotely based volunteer tasks we are currently looking for support with which can be done in teams or as an individual, including:

  • A-Z of conditions directory: Help us to provide information on all 600+ known neurological conditions by researching and copywriting pages for our online A-Z directory
  • ‘Donate your day’: Do your job for the day – just do it for The Brain Charity! Donate your time to help with our day-to-day operations. Please get in touch and tell us a little about your skillset and professional background so we can explore opportunities.
  • Mentoring/critical friend: Provide flexible and informal support to a member of our staff. This could be through a monthly catch-up call or just being available to bounce ideas and provide feedback when needed.
  • Staff upskilling: Deliver a training workshop to our staff – the more skilled our teams are, the better service we can provide for our clients!
  • Bucket collections: We can arrange bucket collection points at supermarkets, train stations and shopping centres across the UK and provide your team with everything they need to raise vital awareness and funds.
  • Organise a fundraiser: Arranging and hosting activities take time! Use your paid volunteer day to organise and run an event like a coffee morning, bake sale or car wash at your workplace.

All volunteers will be provided with an introduction to The Brain Charity, a task brief and training where required.

From time to time, we reach out to businesses for specific help in kind support as needs arise – for example, providing feedback on a marketing campaign for our Fundraising and Communications team.

If your business would be happy to be approached for ad hoc volunteering opportunities like these, please let us know and we’ll get in touch as needed.

What other ways can my company support The Brain Charity?

While we always appreciate offers of time and expertise from corporates, the best way to support The Brain Charity is through fundraising. We rely on donations and fundraising to keep our vital services running.

Organising an activity within your workplace like a coffee morning or bake sale can be a great way to use a paid volunteer day.
