What is encephalitis?
Encephalitis is rare condition in which infection causes swelling in the brain. It can affect anyone at any age and symptoms vary widely.
What causes encephalitis?
The causes of encephalitis can be divided into 2 groups:
- Infectious encephalitis – is caused by viruses such as herpes simplex or shingles, it can also be transmitted from mosquitoes or tics. Less commonly, encephalitis can be triggered by bacterial and fungal infections.
- Autoimmune encephalitis – happens due to the immune system attacking the brain. This can be due to an infection, or it can happen by chance.
What are the symptoms of encephalitis?
The symptoms of encephalitis can be mild at first, with flu like symptoms such as fever and feeling sleepy. If encephalitis goes untreated symptoms will worsen and may include:
- Confusion
- Personality changes
- Seizures
- Problems with balance and co-ordination
- Difficulty speaking and understanding others
Symptoms can progress very quickly, so it’s important to seek medical advice immediately.
