Encephalitis

What is encephalitis?

Encephalitis is rare condition in which infection causes swelling in the brain. It can affect anyone at any age and symptoms vary widely.

What causes encephalitis?

The causes of encephalitis can be divided into 2 groups:

  • Infectious encephalitis – is caused by viruses such as herpes simplex or shingles, it can also be transmitted from mosquitoes or tics. Less commonly, encephalitis can be triggered by bacterial and fungal infections.
  • Autoimmune encephalitis – happens due to the immune system attacking the brain.  This can be due to an infection, or it can happen by chance.

What are the symptoms of encephalitis?

The symptoms of encephalitis can be mild at first, with flu like symptoms such as fever and feeling sleepy. If encephalitis goes untreated symptoms will worsen and may include:

  • Confusion
  • Personality changes
  • Seizures
  • Problems with balance and co-ordination
  • Difficulty speaking and understanding others

Symptoms can progress very quickly, so it’s important to seek medical advice immediately.

Caring for someone with encephalitis

We support carers, friends and family too

Are you a carer for or relative of someone with encephalitis? It’s just as important for you to look after your own physical and mental wellbeing too.

The Brain Charity provides free support for carers, friends and family of people with any form of neurological condition, including encephalitis, from anywhere in the UK.

We also run an additional carers advocacy service for all carers in Liverpool, regardless of which type of condition the person they care for has.

You don’t need to be a formal or registered carer

We can help you even if you don’t view yourself as a formal carer or claim Carer’s Allowance. Find out some of the ways we support carers below.
