Arachnoid Cyst

What is an Arachnoid Cyst?

An Arachnoid Cyst is a cyst which is located on the brain and sometimes the spine. Arachnoid Cysts are sacs filled with cerbrospinal fluid (CSF) which are found on the arachnoid membrane which covers the brain and spinal cord. They often occur near the temporal lobe and the third ventricle.

What causes an Arachnoid Cyst?

There are two types of Arachnoid Cyst; primary and secondary.

  • Primary Arachnoid Cyst are present at birth and are caused by an abnormal development of the brain and spinal cord during pregnancy.
  • Secondary Arachnoid Cysts are caused by head injuries or meningitis tumours.

What are the symptoms of an Arachnoid Cyst?

The symptoms of a Arachnoid Cyst include;

  • Headache
  • Behavioural changes
  • Seizures
  • Difficulties with balance and walking
  • Weakness on one side of the body

If the cysts are present on the spinal cord, symptoms also include;

  • Back and leg pain
  • Numbness in the legs or arms

Are you affected by Arachnoid Cyst?

If you’re affected by a arachnoid cyst, The Brain Charity can support you.

We are the only charity in the UK to be here for every one of the more than 600 different neurological conditions in existence. Individually, many are rare, but combined, they affect 1 in 6 people.

We provide practical help on all aspects of living with colloid cysts, emotional support such as counselling and group therapy and social activities to people with a colloid cyst and their family, friends and carers from all over the UK from our centre in Liverpool.

Caring for someone with a Arachnoid Cyst

We support carers, friends and family too

Are you a carer for or relative of someone with a Arachnoid Cyst? It’s just as important for you to look after your own physical and mental wellbeing too.

The Brain Charity provides free support for carers, friends and family of people with any form of neurological condition, including Arachnoid Cyst, from anywhere in the UK.

We also run an additional carers advocacy service for all carers in Liverpool, regardless of which type of condition the person they care for has.

You don’t need to be a formal or registered carer

We can help you even if you don’t view yourself as a formal carer or claim Carer’s Allowance. Find out some of the ways we support carers below.
