Loss of familiar support structures

Primary schools often provide highly structured support, including:

  • One main teacher who knows the child well
  • Frequent reminders and prompts
  • Close supervision
  • Smaller environments

High school typically assumes a higher level of independence, including:

  • Managing multiple teachers and subjects
  • Remembering schedules independently
  • Advocating for support
  • Handling competing academic and social demands

This shift can feel sudden. Many students need continued scaffolding and guidance while these skills develop.

For example, a young person may understand and complete homework successfully but still forget to submit it on time. This reflects executive functioning skills, not learning ability.
