Emotional responses to transition

Periods of change often place additional pressure on emotional regulation. Stress may appear in different ways depending on the individual child.

Possible responses include:

  • Increased meltdowns or shutdowns
  • School avoidance or refusal
  • Emotional exhaustion after school
  • Physical complaints such as headaches
  • Withdrawal from conversations or activities

These responses usually reflect cognitive and emotional overwhelm.

Many young people hold themselves together throughout the school day and then release stress once they return to a safe environment at home.

Responding with curiosity, empathy and support helps young people feel understood and reduces additional pressure.
