About The Brain Charity
Life for any of us can change in an instant. Experiencing a road traffic accident, a major stroke or being diagnosed with dementia can happen completely unexpectedly and can change our lives forever.
There are hundreds of different neurological conditions including stroke, brain tumour, brain injury, Alzheimer’s and many rarer ones too.
The Brain Charity offers emotional support, practical help and social activities to anyone with a neurological condition and to their family, friends and carers.
Role summary
The Administrative Assistant will provide general administrative support to the Counselling Service and assist the Counselling Service Manager as required.
Key responsibilities
General administration
- Provide comprehensive administrative and clerical support to the Counselling Service and the Counselling Service Manager, including tasks such as photocopying, scanning and data entry.
- Respond to enquiries related to the Counselling Service, referring matters to the Counselling Service Manager or appropriate staff members where necessary.
- Prepare and produce correspondence, documents, spreadsheets, and reports as requested by the Counselling Service Manager, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
- Maintain and update both electronic and paper-based filing systems in accordance with organisational procedures and data protection requirements.
- Contact clients to confirm and remind them of scheduled appointments, maintaining a courteous and professional manner at all times.
- Support the Counselling Service Manager with administrative duties such as minute-taking, record-keeping as required.
Other
- To carry out any other duties required by the Counselling Service.
- Work to The Brain Charity’s policies and procedures.
- Actively support promotional and fundraising events for The Brain Charity, attending a minimum of 1 fundraising or client-focussed event over the course of a year.
- Assist and support volunteers within the team as and when required.
- Carry out any other reasonable tasks which may be required by the charity from time to time.
- Regularly provide cover for all aspects of the department you belong to during any absence relating to your colleagues.

About the role:
As an Info and Advice Volunteer, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals who contact The Brain Charity for help.
Under the guidance of the Norton Street Information and Advice staff, you’ll provide empathetic, professional assistance to clients by calling them back to gather details of their enquiry, communicating waiting times for support, and updating records. Your contribution will help us deliver timely and effective support to those who need it most
We would not be able to provide our services without the support of amazing people like you who offer their time to The Brain Charity. We would love our volunteers to be able to attend at least 1 day per week for 5 hours per day although we know this may not always be possible.
Key responsibilities
- Call clients back to gather essential details for follow-up work.
- Listen empathetically to clients and ensure clients feel heard.
- Communicate waiting times for support clearly and professionally.
- Review older waitlist enquiries to confirm if support is still required.
- Upload client details accurately onto the CRM system.
- Work closely under the guidance and supervision of the Norton Street Information and Advice staff.

Role summary
The Reception Volunteer is the first point of contact for visitors, clients, and staff. This role supports the day-to-day running of front desk operations, providing a friendly, professional, and welcoming environment. Volunteers will greet clients and assist with general administrative tasks to ensure smooth and efficient reception services.
We would not be able to provide our services without the support of amazing people like you who offer their time to The Brain Charity. We would love for our volunteers to be able to attend at least 1 day per week for 4-7 hours per day although we know this may not always be possible.
Key responsibilities
- Greet visitors, clients, and staff in a professional and courteous manner.
- Maintain a tidy and welcoming reception area.
- Assist with administrative tasks such as data entry, filing, and photocopying.
- Manage visitor sign-in/sign-out procedures.
- Provide general information about services offered by The Brain Charity.
- Handle incoming and outgoing mail and deliveries.
- Support other departments with occasional ad hoc tasks.
Skills & requirements
- A clear DBS check (to be arranged before starting).
- Two references.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with basic computer programs (Word, Excel, email, database systems).
- Attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Friendly, approachable, and professional manner.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
