Free Wills Month 2025: Write your will for free with The Brain Charity
We’re giving our supporters the opportunity to write their will for free this October
October is Free Wills Month, an annual campaign with two goals:
- To raise awareness of the importance of having an up-to-date will.
- To highlight the impact leaving a gift in your will to charity can have.
How can I write my will for free?
The Brain Charity has partnered with the professional will writing service Octopus Legacy so our supporters can write their will for free.
With Octopus Legacy you can write your will:
- Online, using their straightforward form.
- Over the phone with a professional will writer
- Over a video call with a professional will writer
- During a face to face will writing appointment or home visit
All wills written with Octopus Legacy are checked by their team of experts before being sent to you to sign in order to make legally binding.
To make an appointment to write your will over the phone, video call or home visit, call Octopus Legacy’s friendly team on 020 4525 3605 and quote ‘The Brain Charity’ to ensure your will is free.

Why is my will free?
At The Brain Charity, we know that life can change suddenly and having an up-to-date will is vital to ensure your wishes are respected.
When you write your will for free with Octopus Legacy, the cost is covered by The Brain Charity on your behalf. Please note, this is only for wills made through Octopus Legacy as part of our partnership with them.
Although there is no obligation to do so, we hope you will consider leaving a gift to The Brain Charity in your will to support our services well into the future.
Why is having an up-to-date will important?
Having an up-to-date will is important to give you and your loved ones peace of mind.
Many of us put off writing our will because we think the process is too complicated or that we don’t have anything of value to leave.
However, this is very rarely the case.
Your will is not just about deciding where your estate will go, but also about making sure your wishes are respected. This can include deciding who will take care of your children, pets or other dependents.
It is important to update your will to reflect life events like getting married, buying property and having children.
What can leaving a gift in my will to The Brain Charity do?
The Brain Charity relies on charitable donations to run our essential services and gifts in wills are a vital part of the backbone of our fundraising income.
Even a small gift in a will can have a large impact, providing much needed future stability.
Leaving a gift to The Brain Charity in your will directly supports our mission to help people living with all forms of neurological conditions to live longer, healthier, happier lives.
In March 2025, we received £35,000 from a supporter who had chosen to leave 6% of their estate as a gift to The Brain Charity in their will.
The amount gifted to The Brain Charity could fund one of our Information and Advice Officers for a year.
Our Information and Advice teams are based in hospitals across Merseyside so they can offer immediate practical support at the point of diagnosis, including help with treatment, emergency support, employment rights, benefits and legal issues.
Just one of our Information and Advice Officers can support over 160 families every year.

Remembering The Brain Charity in your will costs you nothing today but can help secure our future.
If you have already left a gift in your will to The Brain Charity, we would love to hear from you so we can thank you and keep you up to date with our work. Please get in touch with us by emailing legacies@thebraincharity.org.uk or calling 0151 433 3484.
“The Brain Charity have helped me more than any other organisation. That’s why I’ve chosen to leave a gift in my will to The Brain Charity. It was simple and easy to do.”
– Simon, who has pledged a gift to The Brain Charity in his will
