Communication and interaction in neurodivergent children

Communication is one of the most important ways children connect with the world around them. For children who are neurodivergent or who have neurological conditions, communication may look different from what is typically expected.

Many neurodivergent children communicate in creative, meaningful and multi-layered ways that may include speech, gestures, writing, visual systems, movement or technology.

Understanding these differences can help parents, carers and professionals support children to communicate confidently and feel understood.

Key idea: Every child communicates — when adults understand their unique communication style, connection becomes easier.
