Safe environments

Creating safe and predictable environments

Predictability reduces anxiety.

Helpful strategies include:

  • consistent routines
  • visual schedules
  • clear transition warnings
  • familiar rituals such as greetings or bedtime routines
  • Give countdowns before transitions (e.g. 5 minutes, then 2)
  • Use ‘first–then’ language to clarify expectations
  • Prepare for changes in advance (even small ones)
  • Build in regular breaks and downtime
  • Keep routines flexible, not rigid
  • Preview new or unfamiliar situations
  • Use a consistent “return to calm” routine
  • Reassure when plans change

These structures help children feel secure and prepared for what comes next.

Creating regulation spaces for children

Some children benefit from having a quiet space where they can calm down.

This might include:

  • soft furnishings
  • dim lighting
  • sensory tools such as fidget objects
  • headphones or calming music

These spaces allow children to self-regulate in their own time.
