Safe environments
Creating safe and predictable environments
Predictability reduces anxiety.
Helpful strategies include:
- consistent routines
- visual schedules
- clear transition warnings
- familiar rituals such as greetings or bedtime routines
- Give countdowns before transitions (e.g. 5 minutes, then 2)
- Use ‘first–then’ language to clarify expectations
- Prepare for changes in advance (even small ones)
- Build in regular breaks and downtime
- Keep routines flexible, not rigid
- Preview new or unfamiliar situations
- Use a consistent “return to calm” routine
- Reassure when plans change
These structures help children feel secure and prepared for what comes next.
Creating regulation spaces for children
Some children benefit from having a quiet space where they can calm down.
This might include:
- soft furnishings
- dim lighting
- sensory tools such as fidget objects
- headphones or calming music
These spaces allow children to self-regulate in their own time.
