One of the projects The Brain Charity set up in response to the Covid-19 pandemic is a weekly 1-2-1 catch up phone service to help support those who are socially isolated and beat loneliness during lockdown. Our volunteers make regular calls from their homes and are able to speak with clients all over the UK. Calls initially started with 5 to 10 minute chats, but now many are up to an hour a time and include Zoom or WhatsApp video calls.
One person who got in touch was Philip. He lives in Truro, so he would never usually be able to come to a Brain Charity coffee morning or activity. Our team member Diane ran an initial Zoom meeting with him, as he’d never used the system before, and once he felt comfortable he was able to attend his first coffee morning. We then found that Philip was running short on food as he’d not yet received his Universal Credit after losing his job due to Covid-19. Diane searched the internet for his local food bank, telephoned them and they kindly agreed to help him out. What a great outcome from that initial simple phone call!
