Music Makes us! Dementia singing workshops at The Bluecoat for Dementia Action Week

The Brain Charity’s Music Makes Us! project brings music-based therapy to people living with dementia, their family, friends and carers.

To celebrate Dementia Action Week 2022, we are running our Singing and Speech & Language Therapy sessions at The Bluecoat, Liverpool’s contemporary arts centre.

The effects of singing on the brain are well-acknowledged – people with dementia who lose the ability to speak can often still sing as music activates different parts of the brain. Music Makes Us! provides fun, upbeat singing-based exercises to address swallowing difficulties and breathing problems, as well as useful tools to aid communication.

These free, public Music Makes Us! sessions will take place at 12.30pm in The Bluecoat’s upper gallery on:

  • Sunday 22nd May
  • Sunday 29th May
  • Sunday 5th June
  • Sunday 12th June

The sessions will be held as part of The Bluecoat’s ongoing exhibition Where the Arts Belong, which features leading visual artists, writers, storytellers, dancers, musicians and composers, who have worked creatively with people living with dementia on a wide range of artistic activities.
