Alan’s head injury story: “I signed up to volunteer after The Brain Charity helped me”

Alan volunteered at The Brain Food Café after experiencing a head injury

Alan first became aware of The Brain Charity in 2003 after he was the victim of a road traffic collision.

He was knocked down during the incident, resulting in a head injury. Alan received support from the charity after his solicitors, Slater and Gordon, recommended it as a source of information, advice and support.

After the accident he became engaged in activities held at The Brain Charity which helped to build his self-esteem.

He said:

“I attended lots of courses, such as English and confidence building, and they helped me to get my life back. It was all so good, I mean, my speech was limited back then, and now I get told I never shut up! To say thank you, after all the support I received, I signed up to volunteer and I have been in the café ever since.

“The Brain Charity, it’s not just the place, it’s the people. You can talk to any of them about anything and become friends with everyone.”

We would like to say thank you to Alan! Nothing is ever too much trouble, and he’s a real asset to The Brain Food Café.

If you would like to volunteer your time, we are looking for flexible volunteers to be based in our centre, and remote telephone befrienders. Fill in our volunteer application form online here.
